David E. Slates, Sr.

David E. Slates, Sr., 81, of Waterfall Road, Three Springs, PA went home to be with the Lord on Monday evening, October 6, 2014 at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia, PA.

Born January 15, 1933 in Altoona, Blair County, he was the son of the late Clarence and Clarabell (Horner) Slates.  He was first married to Phyllis E. Cutshall who preceded in death on October 21, 2002.  He later married Judy (Mathias) Witt.  

In addition to his wife, Judy Witt Slates, he is survived by his children Judy K., Jr., Cookie, and Jeanne. There are 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

He is also survived by his brother Sam and four sisters Louella, Eddie, Miriam, and Clarabell.  A brother Charles and a sister Thelma Snyder are deceased.

Mr. Slates was the founder, owner and operator of Slates Salvage, Three Springs for over 40 years.  He was also a lifetime member of the Operating Engineers Union.

He was passionate about his business and especially enjoyed fishing.  He enjoyed teaching others to do things the right way. He was a joy to spend time with and he loved to share his fishing stories with anyone who would listen.  His family will miss his wisdom along with his sense of humor.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 11, 2014 at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, 565 Ridgley Street, Orbisonia, PA with his daughter Pastor Joyce Zeveney officiating.  Interment will be at Cherry Grove Cemetery, Three Springs, PA.  Friends may call at the funeral home from 6—9:00 PM on Friday and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
