Corbin, Margaret Obituary

Margaret Louise Corbin, 86, formerly of Mount Union and most recently a resident in the independent living facility of Woodland Retirement Community in Orbisonia, died at 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon.

A daughter of the late David R. and Keturah J. (Whitsel) Long, she was born Dec. 28, 1927, in Union Township, Huntingdon County.

She was united in marriage to Samuel L. Corbin on May 28, 1955, in Bratton Township, Mifflin County, by the Rev. J. Richard Gutshall, pastor of the Pine Glen Church of the Brethren. Her husband died Dec. 6, 2008.

Surviving Mrs. Corbin are her children: Natalie Love and husband Donald of Huntingdon and David Corbin of Longfellow; grandchildren: Donald Love III and wife Jennifer of Lynchburg, VA, and Emily (Kate) Esworthy and husband Starrett of Union Bridge, MD; grandsons: Judah and Simon Love; and granddaughter: Johnnie Esworthy; along with a number of nieces and nephews, grand-nieces/nephews, and great-grand-nieces/nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Philip Corbin; half-sisters: Goldie Lamberson and Blanche Gartland; sisters: Mary Madden and Sara (Gladys) Varner; brothers: Robert Long and Jay (Willis) Long; and a niece: Emma (Lamberson) Waite, who was reared in the home.

She attended grammar school at various one-room schoolhouses in Huntingdon County, among them the Whitsel School in Hill Valley, the Dugout School in Mapleton Depot, and the Sherman School in Smith Valley, and completed her education at Mount Union High School.

Prior to her marriage, she worked in Johnstown as a caregiver in the hospital's polio ward, a position she took so she could be near her four-year-old nephew, Bobby, who for an extended period was a patient in that ward. A homemaker most of her married life, she worked prior to her child-rearing years as a seamstress for L. Greif Bros. and later served as her grandchildren's sitter during their preschool years.

Mrs. Corbin was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Mount Union.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, 565 Ridgley St., Orbisonia, the Rev. Laura King officiating. A private interment will be conducted at the Bowman Chapel Cemetery, Smith Valley, at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Flowers will be accepted. Those who so desire may make memorial contributions to the Building Fund of the First United Methodist Church, 15 W. Shirley St., Mount Union.
