Melvin Harold Barnett, 94, formerly of Sportsman's Club Road, Calvin, PA and more recently a resident of the Woodland Retirement Community, Orbisonia, PA, died at 8:14 AM, Sunday, July 27, 2014 at UPMC, Altoona.

Born April 20, 1920 in Todd Twp., Huntingdon Co., PA, he was a son of the late Lewis Robert and B. Mae (Hampton) Barnett. He was married to the former Vivian F. Buck on June 18, 1941 at Cassville, PA. Mrs. Barnett preceded in death on April 25, 2009.

Surviving are five children, Melvin W. Barnett and wife Nina of Harrisburg, PA, Terry H. Barnett and wife Susan of Aliquippa, PA, Diana K. Hershey and husband Richard of Lancaster, PA, Danny R. Barnett and wife Leona of Harrisburg, PA and Steven J. Barnett and wife Barbara of State College, PA. Two sons, Harold Samuel Barnett and Michael L. Barnett preceded in death. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and three siblings, Irene George and husband James of McConnellstown, PA, Gloria Russell of Todd, PA and Gary Barnett and wife Stephanie of Red Lion, PA. Two brothers, Kenneth Barnett and Norman Barnett, preceded in death.

Mr. Barnett had attended the Trough Creek United Methodist Church, Todd, PA, for most of his adult life, where he was very active and participated in numerous activities and served as a lay minister. He later attended the Cassville United Methodist Church. He retired in 1985 from D. W. Miller Construction, Inc., Huntingdon, PA where he was responsible for payroll.

Mr. Barnett was a veteran of World War II serving in the U. S. Army with Co. A, 68th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division. He served in Europe and was on the front lines at Anzio Beach. He was wounded several times, receiving two Purple Hearts, the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge and European American Theatre Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars.

He was honorably discharged in 1945 as First Sergeant.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, July 31, 2014 at the Robert I. McClain Funeral Home, 245 Seminary St., Cassville, PA with Rev. James Thomas officiating. Interment will be made at Cassville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
